Solange Knowles Speak Divorce, Her Individual & Musical Freedom With Complex Magazine (Cover)

Solange Knowles recently sat down with Complex magazine to discuss finally being able to be the true artist that she is, finding herself after divorce, being a mother to her son Juelz, and finding the balance.

On Finding Herself After Her Divorce
Solange first admits to “wil’ in” out a bit after divorcing her childhood sweetheart, Daniel Smith, in 2009. She says,“Houston’s hip-hop scene was in the forefront,” Solange recalls. “I remember going to all of these shows: Paul Wall, Bun B, Mike Jones, Slim Thug. I enjoyed the freedom and the newness of experiencing people and a world that I had not had much access to.”

On Being In Control Of Her Career
“I wanted to make all of the creative artistic decisions but I wasn’t the one paying for it. And they didn’t fully trust me to make them,” she says. “Every decision was a battle. It was exhausting. I wanted to be in a position where not only was the music fully my body of work, but everything thereafter was also my body of work. I knew that meant I had to leave and that I had to struggle.”

It’s my very unsophisticated way of taking the power back. I’ve always had an issue with [the idea that]: “OK, we’ve both decided to do this. Why am I a slut and you’re the player? You didn’t get anything from me that I didn’t get from you.”

Perry and Winfrey will work together on two new television series that will air on Oprah’s OWN network very soon. Perry has created, written and will be producer for series, “Love Thy Neighbor” and “The Haves & Have Nots”.

The new issue hits stores on May 10th.

On working with Pharrel Williams on her new record:

“No one let me sing the way that Pharrell does, which is to just go in and do your sh*t and do all of the harmonies that you do, which is what brings it to where I’m from. Which is being from Nashville and being around Dolly [Parton, her godmother] and listening to her sing. No one would give me the chance to say, “Turn the Auto-Tune off, turn the filter off, and just listen to what I’m saying.” He was the first person that ever did that. I can never say that I don’t love “Party in the U.S.A.” and that I’m not appreciative of it. It would be like my dad saying that he hated “Achy Breaky.” It’s what gives you everything that you have. I would never take it back. But that’s not who I am, that’s not where I want to sing, that’s not what I want to sing, and that’s not what I want my voice to sound like, because you can’t hear me through there. I like that Rihanna has a tone of her own. Beyoncé has a tone of her own. I have a tone of my own. Everything else is just blending into one club mix—but we keep our 808s in there because I love them.”

How Miley describes herself:

“In my mind I’m Gucci Mane, but on paper I’m a pop artist. [laughs]”

And those constant breakup rumor about her & fiance Liam Hemsworth:

“I’m not home with my boyfriend all the time. We work. Every week it’s ‘Are they broken up?’ Because we don’t see a photo of them.’ I don’t have time go to Starbucks with my boyfriend every morning. I wish I did, but I don’t. I’d rather chill at my house and be there for the time I actually get to spend with him. And then I’m at the studio all day. He gets up to work out at six and I come home at five from the studio. I put this record before everything, and I’ve never done that with anything. I’ve put too much into this record to put anything else in front of it.”

Yesterday we unveiled the new Cosmopolitan June 2013 issue with Ms. Khloe Kardashian on the cover. Today we have the dark haired beauty dishing on Kimye’s relationship, never becoming a momager, her trouble conceiving and criticism she has faced and comparisons to her sisters.

On whether Kanye West and sister and mom-to-be, Kim Kardashian, are a good match Khloe says, “I think Kanye knows how to deal with Kim really well. Because we’ve known him for so long, he’ll come to us if he wants advice on a birthday present or something. I like that. Kris [Humphries, Kim’s ex-husband] wouldn’t even talk to us. I love that with Kanye we have that friendship. Because when you’re with one of us you’re with all of us.”

Seems like Mr. West fits in nicely with the family.

On trouble conceiving a child she says, “I just wanted to be, ‘Hey, let’s have a baby,’ [with husband Lamar Odom] and we would just have one. Kourtney did. And I wish that was the way for me. But it won’t be. I’ll have to take hormones. I do want to have a baby, but I don’t feel the urgency to have one this very moment.”

On her mom, Kris Jenner, being the family’s momager and never becoming one:

“I’d never manage my kids. We gang up on Mom and that has to be so hard. Now I’m getting older I feel sorry for her rather than resent her. “[Once my mom told me] I was gaining weight, but she was talking to me as a manager, like I was ruining a brand deal. It’s hard to understand that and it’s more hurtful when it’s coming from my mom.”

“We are growing into very similar people. It’s cool, it’s good. It’s not always easy, though!”

On Having Another Baby
“There are some films that I want to do, and I love my business and I want to expand that a lot. We’ll sort of see. I mean, if I want to have another kid, I gotta kind of get on it. But then you see a baby and you smell a baby and you’re like, ‘Yep, I do.’ I don’t know. It’s a very big decision, so we’ll see. Anyway, I’m not doing it this month!”
