Congratulations are in order for Rihanna. The Bajan beauty and singer has finally scored her first number one album with her seventh studio album, ‘Unapologetic’. Not only did the album debut atop the UK charts it also topped the US Billboard 200 charts. The final numbers are in! ‘Unapologetic’ has sold 238,949 in its first week. The album is also the singer’s highest selling debut of her career.
Although her nearly disastrous ’777′ tour that left journalists disappointed, it was a driving promotional vehicle. The album’s controversial title and collaboration with ex Chris Brown didn’t hurt either.
That Rihanna reign certainly ain’t letting up.
Last Tuesday, Kendrick Lamar dropped his highly anticipated album, “good kid, m.A.A.d city” and as expected he moved big numbers. Coming in at number 2, according to Hits Daily Double, with $219.6K, which was slightly under his $240K projection. _______READMORE
Well, he’s done it again. Drake has reclaimed the #1 spot with sophomore album, ‘Take Care’. Although earlier projections suggested the album would sell 700,000 in its first week, the album fell short, but only slightly, with 659,190. A major accomplishment for the artist. In fact, the album has sold over 200,00 more copies than his debut his, ‘Thank Me Later’. Congrats Mr. Graham! The rapper tweeted less than 24 hours ago,
“I can’t even find the words to express my appreciation..’thank you and I owe you’ is all that comes to mind…truly.”
Kelly Rowland‘s latest album, ‘Here I Am’, debuted #3 on the Billboard’s 200 chart this week. The album has sold 76,399 copies. Not bad for an album that received minimal promotion leading up to its release last week. Besides Rowland’s smashing BET Awards performance, the album’s promotion lacked to say the least. Although the album is not the singer’s highest charting album (her 2006 album, ‘Ms. Kelly’ debuted #2) it has given the singer her first #1 and commercial hit, with “Motivation” featuring Lil’ Wayne. However, I cannot deny I am a bit disappointed. I would have loved to see Ms. Rowland break the 100k mark. Perhaps despite a #1 single or even the lack of promotion, the album also lacks depth and more hits. This is solely my opinion of course (and this is coming from a Rowland fan). Moving along….
It seems Adele‘s ’21′ is still going strong since its release earlier this year, coming in at #2. Her album has already sold over 8 million copies worldwide while simultaneously breaking records. Undoubtedly Adele’s 21 is the best selling album this year. Beyonce‘s ’4′ album, released June 24th, seems to be going strong as well. The album comes in just behind Rowland at #4. In fact, of August 1st, the has gone platinum, according to the RIAA, with the shipment of 1 million albums in the U.S. alone. Although there has been some confusion as of late, let me emphasize by saying, units shipped does not mean units sold. To date the album has sold over 500,000, making gold but is expected to officially go platinum.
Beyonce‘s ’4′ album still reigns as the #1 album for its second consecutive week. Although the album received mediocre reviews and ave her her lowest first week album sales, queen Bey ain’t worried bout ya’ll! She’s just fine, thank you very much! The album raked in another 111,464 in sales, that’s better than most artists’ can sell in their first week. The legend in the making proves her empire is secure and even with little promotion statewide she is one of the best female artists of our time. Congrats.
As for Lloyd….hmmm…his charm, good looks and smooth R&B couldn’t help his album sales.
Lady Gaga‘s ‘Born This Way’ not only debuted at #1, but it sold over 1 million copies in one week! Can you say wow!!! The little monsters have taken over for sure.
The album sold 1,108,000 copies in its first week to be exact! According to Nielsen SoundScan, its only the 17th album to sell a million copies in a week since SoundScan began tracking album sales back in 1991, and the highest sales week since 2005′s ‘The Massacre’ by 50 cent, which sold 1,141,000 in its first week.
Another major accomplishment for Gaga, ‘Born This Way‘ is also her first #1 album to date. 2008′s ‘The Fame’ debut and peaked at #2 while 2009-2010′s ‘The Fame Monster’ EP reached #5.
The heightened sales, however, could have been boosted by Amazon’s sale of the album for $.99 last Monday. The high volume of traffic even resulted in a freeze on Amazon’s website, causing the site to again sell the album at $.99 a unit on Wednesday. Initial projections were set at 400,000 but by Monday night projections were well in the 650,000-700,000 mark. Many began to wonder if Gaga had what it took to garner sales in the 1 million mark. And well, she surpassed expectations.
Mother Monster sure has some loyal followers. Kudos to Gaga and her success!
Wiz Khalifa’s debut album ‘Rolling Papers’ scores #2 spot, behind Britney Spear’s ‘Femme Fatale’, selling 191,777 in its first week. I’m pretty sure if it wasn’t for Britney Khalifa would have undoubtedly garnered the #1 spot.
The pop princess sold 278,618 of her latest album, less than previous albums of course but still very impressive.

Last week, Chris Brown’s outburst following his ABC Good Morning America interview seems to be long forgotten. The singer was welcomed back to ABC’s Dancing With The Stars performing hits “Yeah 3x”, “Forever”, “Beautiful People” and he proved just why we loved him in the first place.
To top it all off Brown’s album ‘F.A.M.E’ is currently #1 on Billboard 200, selling 273,346 in its first week and is the second highest selling album of 2011 behind Adele’s ’21′ selling 351k in its first week. The album is also the singer’s second highest selling album of his career since 2007′s ‘Exclusive’ which sold 294k. His 2009 album ‘Graffiti’ , however, following his assault on then girlfriend Rihanna only sold 102k that same year. Coming in at #2, Jennifer Hudson’s ‘I Remember Me’, selling 167,373.
Can’t deny the guy is talented. See performances below.
