Jill Scott Speaks Being A Single Mother With Ebony Magazine

Jill_Scott_Ebony_Cover_Talks_Single_Mother

Jill Scott took some time out of her busy schedule recently to sit down with Ebony magazine. The singer has been quite busy raising her son, Jett Hamilton Roberts, actually. Nearly four years ago she welcomed Jett with former drummer, Lil’ John Roberts. He’ll turn four on April 25th.

During her interview, she dishes on what it’s like being a single mother the difficulty of raising a son to be a man. Here’s a bit of what she had to say.

On motherhood:
Motherhood is getting your hands and your feet in the soil…When Jett puts my face in his hands and tells me, ‘Mommy you’re so pretty’ or smells me, it’s so wonderful.”

On raising a young man:
It’s challenging being a single mom…No matter what I do, I’ll never be a man. Ever. I can show Jett how to be a thinker, how to enjoy music or how to feel, and to conquer. But I cannot show him how to be a man.”

Jill Scott Loses 50lbs, Looks Amazing!

Singer and actress Jill Scott, who covers the June issue of Ebony magazine, recently revealed her secrets on losing 50lbs.

The singer says,  “I’m past caring about some things that never mattered in the first place and [I'm] in love with my baby boy….. I’m also unafraid. I know how much music has always meant to me, how much it means to us all, and I know there’s someone out there, maybe just one someone, who can feel inspired by being brave.”

How exactly did Jill lose all that weight? With the help of a trainer, Scott was able to shed the pounds while still having a little fun. “Anything that makes me feel like I’m not working out. We go outside and throw footballs, go for walks,” she says.

The actress also told the magazine, she is “in a good place.”

Keep it up Jill. You look beautiful!

[New Music] Jill Scott “So In Love” Feat. Anthony Hamilton

How refreshing is this?! Neo-soul artists Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton have collaborated together on a new single titled, “So In Love”. Like everyone else I appreciate a good dance track but, as I’ve stated before, sometimes you need that good old fashion R&B jam you can groove to. The kind of song that just makes you unwind from a hard days work. This single does that for me. The mid-tempo single is reminiscent of Scott’s earlier work from her debut album ‘Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds & Vol. 1′, where she advocates to find and be in love and being in love with love. Great album! Here’s “So In Love”, have a happy Friday ya’ll!

Scott is now preparing for her sixth studio album release ‘Light of the Sun’, you can look out for that sometime later this year.

Jill Scott’s Reaction To Brothers Who Marry White Women!

Fresh off the heels of the successful sequel to “Why Did I Get Married”, appropriately titled “Why Did I Get Married Too”, Grammy award winning singer/songwriter and actress Jill Scott caught some flack for revealing that she can’t help but to “wince” when she sees a successful black man who married outside his race. Here’s what she had to say during her interview with Essence magazine.

“My new friend is handsome, African-American, intelligent and seemingly wealthy. He is an athlete, loves his momma, and is happily married to a White woman. I admit when I saw his wedding ring, I privately hoped. But something in me just knew he didn’t marry a sister. Although my guess hit the mark, when my friend told me his wife was indeed Caucasian, I felt my spirit…wince. I didn’t immediately understand it. My face read happy for you. My body showed no reaction to my inner pinch, but the sting was there, quiet like a mosquito under a summer dress.

Was I jealous? Did the reality of his relationship somehow diminish his soul’s credibility? The answer is not simple. One could easily dispel the wince as racist or separatist, but that’s not how I was brought up. I was reared in a Jehovah’s Witness household. I was taught that every man should be judged by his deeds and not his color, and I firmly stand where my grandmother left me. African people worldwide are known to be welcoming and open-minded. We share our culture sometimes to our own peril and most of us love the very notion of love. My position is that for women of color, this very common “wince” has solely to do with the African story in America.

When our people were enslaved, “Massa” placed his Caucasian woman on a pedestal. She was spoiled, revered and angelic, while the Black slave woman was overworked, beaten, raped and farmed out like cattle to be mated. She was nothing and neither was our Black man. As slavery died for the greater good of America, and the movement for equality sputtered to life, the White woman was on the cover of every American magazine. She was the dazzling jewel on every movie screen, the glory of every commercial and television show. She was unequivocally the standard of beauty for this country, firmly unattainable to anyone not of her race. We daughters of the dust were seen as ugly, nappy mammies, good for day work and unwanted children, while our men were thought to be thieving, sex-hungry animals with limited brain capacity.

We reflect on this awful past and recall that if a Black man even looked at a White woman, he would have been lynched, beaten, jailed or shot to death. In the midst of this, Black women and Black men struggled together, mourned together, starved together, braved the hoses and vicious police dogs and died untimely on southern back roads together. These harsh truths lead to what we really feel when we see a seemingly together brother with a Caucasian woman and their children. That feeling is betrayed. While we exert efforts to raise our sons and daughters to appreciate themselves and respect others, most of us end up doing this important work alone, with no fathers or like representatives, limited financial support (often court-enforced) and, on top of everything else, an empty bed. It’s frustrating and it hurts!

Our minds do understand that people of all races find genuine love in many places. We dig that the world is full of amazing options. But underneath, there is a bite, no matter the ointment, that has yet to stop burning. Some may find these thoughts to be hurtful. That is not my intent. I’m just sayin’.”

Jill Scott To Essence: "I Am A Single Mom"

Shortly after the arrival of their 2 month old son, Jett Hamilton Roberts, Jill Scott reported to Essence.com that her and fiance Lil John Roberts are no longer together.

ESSENCE.COM: Congrats to you on your new bundle of joy, Jett Hamilton. How has motherhood been treating you?

SCOTT: Wonderful. I named him after a black gemstone that my makeup artist in Africa had; it was simply called Jet, and I fell in love with it and the name because I thought my beautiful baby is a gem. I truly loved being pregnant and feeling what was going on inside my body and watching it change. It’s difficult to recoup but still amazing nonetheless. I would have another one.

ESSENCE.COM: So does that mean you had an easy labor of love?

SCOTT: Not at all. I was in labor for 36 hours. After that experience, anytime I have reservations and think I can’t do anything I remind myself that I survived the birth of my child (Laughs). Although I didn’t scream my baby into this world, the pain continued after he was born for at least three weeks. During labor I felt like I needed to put the fire out. Everybody kept telling me the pain wasn’t going to last forever but after 20 hours of it I left the building. I felt like I was on the ceiling looking down at myself like, Dag, girl, you still in labor? I know my experience isn’t everyone’s but I believe people need to be realistic when sharing their stories about their pregnancies and birth. When he arrived I held him in my arms for about an hour and then went to sleep because I was simply exhausted.

ESSENCE.COM: Well, at least your hubby-to-be was there to support. How has he been adjusting to Jett?

SCOTT: Yes, he was there and for a couple of days after wards while I stayed in hospital, but John and I are no longer together. When you have a baby you’re dealing with a lot of emotions and I don’t know how much of it had to do with us breaking up, but it happens. We definitely love our son and we are co-parenting and working on being friends. It is what it is. I have a lot of support, so I want for nothing as far as that’s concerned. I know some might criticize me or the fact that my son is being raised in a single-parent home, but I wasn’t raised in a two-parent home and I had a good relationship with my dad. I have hopes for him and I’m sure his father will do his part as well.

Keep your head up Jill. It’s better for Jett to have two loving parents who aren’t together than having two parents staying together for the sake of the child when there is resentment and hostility there. Good luck to them both.
